catholic school in maryland. five football players have been kicked out of school. the scandal unfolded last weekend when players were accused of hiring prostitutes. tony tull joins us live from the field in annapolis where tonight's -- >> jim and doreen, we brought you that information at 235k that those kids had been expelled, and also spoke to you about whether or not they'll be able to attend hool. the answer is, yes, they will be able to attend public school. a live look light now, dematha set to take on calvert has. but it was a phone call last saturday that set in motion the expulsion of those five kids. >> i support the school. i'm behind the coach and the coaches staff. i'm going to assume that the administrators did everything they could to make sure that things are going to go properly.

>> the school community is saddened and hurt by the actions of these few who do not reflect the character of the community. >> the principal alleged accusations that five players called three prostitutes. the school says 65 players were on the trip, chaperoned by 18 results and that routine bed checks were done. mcmahon also added that the last hall check was at 4:30 a.m. >> the incident referred to in the newspaper occurred after 5:00 a.m. the school first learned of it on tuesday afternoon and began an investigation. >> as of this afternoon, a school spokesperson told news4 that all five students have been expelled. one thing is clear, though, the parents and school are lending support to the football staff. >> the school stands behind or coach, elijah brooks, his staff. >> i'm sure they did -- kids

instead we're about 8%. you know the difference that that makes? 9 million people. >> reporter: two sides to one report that's sure to have voters talking. economists say 200,000 new jobs need to be created a month to lower of the unemployment rate. on capitol hill, i'm danielle lee, news4. and rom ann romney came to leesburg, and sat down with julie carey for a one-on-one chat. she shares her opinion on how her husband and the obamas fared. that's coming up in our next half hour. the teenage who pleaded guilty to killing hi neighbor will serve the maximum sentence. he was sentenced to 60 years in prison today. he pleaded guilty in april, and first degree burglary and theft. police say that fitz admitted stabbing thelma steele several

times. and he returned to her home later that day and stole her purse. the husband of a former mayor in northern virginia, convicted of sexually abusing young girls learned his fate today. michael gardner got 22 years in prison. for him, the case isn't over. richard jordan joins us from the newsroom with more. richard? >> doreen, gardner didn't flinch when the -- the victims feel justice is done. because of the nature of the crimes e. were not identified them. >> robbing it gardner defense her husband. will spend more than two decades in prison for abusing their daughters ease friends. two 10-year-olds say they inappropriately touched them. the victims ease parents say the

girls told the truth. >> if you're a kid, you've got to talk to your parents, and if if you're a parent, you've got to believe your kids. it's crucial to believe your kids the moment they speak up. >> reporter: but michael gardner denies it. he said in court -- i have been falsely accused and wrongfully convicted of crimes i did not commit. a cry for help from one distressed child. that miscarrying has cast us into darkness. >> i'm not distressed, my children are not here. they know their father will be in prison unless the appeals are successful, until, as they say, the age of their grandfather. that distresses them. >> reporter: the prosecutors pointed out the convicted sex offender never accepted responsibility or showed remorse, but the victims' parents say that's something that will likely never happen.

>> i don't think he has the ability within himself to admit what he truly is. >> michael gardner will serve 22 years in prison followed by three years probation. his attorney says he will appeal. the pastor of a local church is vowing to carry on their work despite a braising daytime robbery. d.c. police released 24 surveillance video. the robbery happened at st. stephen. the pastor who was in the church sang wear spoke to news4's jackie bensen today? >> our doors are open to people who come. we are here for them, and we will remain here for them. >> the gunman took off with

personal property. he's still at large tonight. a d.c. police captain was arrested this week and accused of assaulting his wife in the back of a moving car. according to court records, lamar west and his wife were arguing in the backseat when he began choking her about 3:00 monday morning in upper marlboro. the driver of the car stopped, another passenger pulled west out of the backseat holding him down under police got there. west has been charged with second-degree assault. d.c. police haven't commented on his status with the department. officials are taking more action to ease the chronic flooding problem. the city is putting new stormwater retention devices in the neighborhood. residents can get hip installing rain barrels, and officials may install new storm drains. these are short-term solutions, as the city tries to work out a larger plan. it has flooded several times this summer. >> is there more in store?

at least 64 people are dead after a series of earthquake in southwestern china today, the first 5.6 magnitude quake was centered near the yunan province. more than 700 people were injured, 100,000 have been relocated. the quakes caused landslides in remote areas preventing rescuers from getting to people. seismologists say because it is quakes were shallow, they caused significantly more damage. a suspect is charged in yesterday's airplane hoax.

>> officers called it a nasty trick, a hoax carried out on shell's 29th birthday. >> whoever it is, they should be held accountable. >> shell pointed the finger at kenneth smith, the new boyfriend of an ex-girlfriend. but it was shell who found himself in a compromising position when he finally landed at dfw airport late yesterday, where officers against were waiting on the tarmac. all the publicity caught the attention of police in texas where shell faced arrest warrants after missing court appearances. >> no comment, just let me alone, please. >> reporter: this afternoon he posted bond and walked out jail with the same carry-on and clothes on the initial trip, a bizarre trip that ultimately landed him a night behind bars.

89 degrees, severe weather tomorrow, i do think we have a high probability of some severe weather. maybe damaging winds, too. 86 degrees right now, a duped of 70. anytime you're at 70, we do have a files breeze out of the south at 14 miles per hour that. wind will pick up tomorrow ago well. 87 downs towards la plata, and a little cooler, low 80s down along the chesapeake, where we do have a bay influence there. a couple storms firing up. also over towards washington and frederick county, seeing some stormyness here. this storm had had some lightning associated with t. right along 70 here. they're starting to see some showers, nothing too heavy, but fairly heavy downpours, just not seeing the strong thunderstorms. that will change tomorrow, with this system. take a look at the severe thunderstorm watch, as you see them in the pink from pittsburgh

all the way through cincinnati to st. louis. a very strong front will make its way through the region tomorrow. that front will give us a good chance to severe weather. this is from storm prediction center, showing that we do have a slight risk of severe thunderstorms. what that means is a 30% chance of severe thunderstorms. in the moderate risk, that's above a 50% chance. we're going to see a very good chance of strong to severity storms tomorrow afternoon, timingwise, let's break it down for you. this is right around 5:00 -- so between 84 and 6, a bit earlier to the west. but i do think we'll see it between the late afternoon hours and once again the biggest threat will be the severe thunderstorms. you're talking about brief heavy rain, maybe a downpour, and then out of here, but damaging wind is the biggest threat. so if you see these storms, you want to make sure you get inside very, very quickly.

the good news is they will pass very quickly, and then behind the system tomorrow night, it becomes gorgeous, and sunday, sunday will be a spectacular day for plen of sunshine. a few closures warm and humid. tomorrow morning, starting off on a good note, i think, temperatures between 64 and 72. tomorrow afternoon those winds will start to kick up between 15 and 25 miles per hour, but they could be gusting to 50 and 60 during those storms during the afternoon, to once again, keep a watchful eye on the sky. 79 on your sunday, then these probably.nicest stretch of weather we have seen in quite some time. plenty of sunshine, highs a bit below average. cool at night, we're talking some areas in the upper 40s in the extreme cooler suburbs.

parking. planners say the project will triple the numbers of projects available. it was supposed to start on tuesday, but it was pushed back. in virginia meanwhile, drivers will have an easier and safer way to get to the beltway. a new fly-over ramp opens tomorrow, connecting driver directly to the north and southbound sides. currently you have to change multiple lanes to get to the beltway. with this new ramp, it won't be necessarily. it's only for traffic exiting the dulles access road. today we learned the name of a woman killed in this horrific crash yesterday on i want-95 and fairfax. 29-year-old sarah jones of woodbridge, virginia died at the scene. she merged onto the highway from morton road, the truck was loaded with 20,000 pounds of carpet. it went down that embankment and jackknifed. the truck driver suffered minor
